The Moral Fortitude of the US Military Astounds Me

18 08 2006

You know what they say, ‘The best of the best’ – ‘a few good men’ – etc etc.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 — A high-level military investigation into the killings of 24 Iraqis in Haditha last November has uncovered instances in which American marines involved in the episode appear to have destroyed or withheld evidence, according to two Defense Department officials briefed on the case.

I’m glad my country’s military has such high standards – It really casts the US in a good light.  Read the NYT article.

And yes, before I start getting hate mail, I realize that perhaps the soldiers involved in this incident do not represent the whole of the military – but that does not change the fact that their actions reflect not only on the entire military but on the entire country and western values as a whole.  Just as many of the actions of the military are examples of courageousness, love, and kindness, one can  not use those to ignore those actions that are beyond inexcusable.  A country should never allow itself to maintain a force of such low moral standards.  One bad apple is one bad apple, but it is also a warning that you should check the rest of the bushel – for they may all be rotten.
