The Chinese government has decided to revamp the old history books.
“Our traditional version of history was focused on ideology and national identity,” said Zhu Xueqin, a historian at Shanghai University. “The new history is less ideological, and that suits the political goals of today.”
The history books no longer focus on raising good little Marxists – now they focus on raising good little whatever-you-want-to-call-the-current-Chinese-government-ists.
It seems impossible to me to write a true history book if you have goals in mind. The only goal a history book should have is to educate people about history. Leave it to other social sciences to teach ideologies.
