Robert Gates – Secretary of Defense

6 12 2006

According to the NYT, the Senate has confirmed Gates as the new Secretary of Defense, replacing the disgraced Donald Rumsfeld.

The decision came after a confirmation hearing and floor debate that unfolded in less than 48 hours, reflecting the bipartisan sentiment that a course change in Iraq is vital as well as a strong desire to quickly replace Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, who announced his intention to resign last month.

Gates has a big job ahead of him and I don’t envy him. I think he also represents a huge opportunity for the republican party to regain some respect – to show that they’re not all retarded. I’m interested to see what he is going to do about this whole Iraq fiasco.
