Researchers have found stem cells in human amniotic fluid. This means that no embryos are harmed during the collection of stem-cells. Religious activists have stopped life saving research to protect already-dead fetuses, so this new development means the research can continue, without upsetting the senseabilities of the conservatives among us. From the Denver Post :
“So far, we’ve been successful with every cell type we’ve attempted to produce from these stem cells,” said Dr. Anthony Atala, director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C., and senior author of the report published online by the journal Nature Biotechnology.
I’m sure that the stem cell research opponents will find someway to block this latest advance – I’ve always thought that they must be against the research – for I’ve yet to hear a compelling argument for not using stem cells from already dead fetuses. Hopefully none of that will even matter now.
