The Great Firewall of China Slowly Crumbling

12 10 2006

China (also known as the Great Firewall of China) has reportedly unblocked access to Wikipedia, the user edited free encyclopedia.

Why is this news worthy?  China blocks access to a large part of the web – I guess so that the people can’t find out how fucked up their political environment actually is.  Some web sites, like Google, censor their search results so that they will not violate China’s strict censorship guidelines.

Wikipedia famously told China where it could shove its censorship guidelines – resulting in their website being inaccessible from within China.
